About the photographer

Seagulls circle in the air as the ferry departs for Terschelling. As a child, I was mesmerized by the sight: a dance in the sky, a play with the wind. Years later, windsurfing at sea gave me that same sensation of freedom and space. Always with the shoreline still in view, to feel free, knowing there is a place to return to. This is likely the origin of my fascination with space and belonging.

Amsterdam came to embody that sense of belonging. A city that appears vast, yet feels intimate, almost like a village. I came to know it while studying, living, and working there, and grew attached to its rhythm: a city in motion, yet one that holds moments of unexpected stillness.

During my student years, I moved frequently within the city. The search for a small but characterful room along the canal suited me well. These wanderings led me into the streets, walking, observing, curious about what lies behind the façades.

Alongside my work as a hospital pharmacist, a profession I practiced until 2025, my photographic practice gradually took shape. Between 2012 and 2015, I completed the part-time photography program at the Fotovakschool, where I learned to look more closely at form, light, and structure, deepening my awareness of the layered nature of places.

In 2017, I encountered the work of the Italian architectural photographer Luca Capuano online. His images moved me by evoking a sense of home in the most unexpected locations. That discovery led me to Bologna. Our meeting led to a brief but intensive period of personal mentorship in architectural photography. His attentive, precise, and respectful way of working left a lasting mark on my own way of seeing.

This attentiveness to narrative and form found expression in my work for Monumentaal magazine, for which I photographed architectural heritage between 2018 and 2022, remarkable places where history, architecture, and emotion intertwine.

In recent years, my focus has shifted increasingly toward the present moment. My gaze has moved from walls to water, toward what appears in reflections and what dissolves in the subtle ripple of the surface. Where reality and imagination momentarily align and the everyday reveals a quiet magic.

My photography is an ongoing exploration of spatial experience, and of that fleeting moment when a place begins to feel like home.
